As the United States Election Day draws near, national anxiety is understandably rising, given all that we've been through this year and the issues before us as a people. One antidote to anxiety is prayer. We invite you to participate in this non-partisan Election Day Prayer Vigil. Sign up for a time between 6am and 9pm on Nov 3, 2020. Durring that hour, please find a quiet place and pray for our democracy and for all those exercising their right to vote. Some suggested prayers appear below.
Suggested Prayers
Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From The Book of Common Prayer
Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From The Book of Common Prayer
O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From The Book of Common Prayer
God of freedom, we pray for our nation, and all the nations of the world: For peace and unity across barriers of language, color, and creed; for elected and appointed leaders, that they would serve the common good. Inspire all people with courage to speak out against hatred, to actively resist evil. Unite the human family in bonds of love. From The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music's Prayers for Racial Reconciliation and Justice
God of peace, we pray for this community: For our local leaders; for our schools and markets; for our neighborhoods and workplaces. Kindle in every heart a desire for equality, respect, and opportunity for all. Give us courage to strive for justice and peace among all people, beginning here at home. From The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music's Prayers for Racial Reconciliation and Justice
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us for the sake of your love: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne. In your most holy name we pray and give thanks. Amen. From The Book of Common Prayer
